PORT-AU-PRINCE (Reuters) – Two of the 17 American and Canadian Christian missionaries abducted in Haiti last month have been released, the group that organized the trip to the Caribbean nation said on Sunday without giving further details.

“We know that two Haitian guerrillas were released,” Ohio Christian Aid Ministries said in a statement.

A 16-year-old American and a Canadian, including five children, were abducted in October after visiting an orphanage. The incident highlighted the serious problem of the kidnapping in Haiti, which has worsened between the economic and political crisis and the escalation of violence.

Haitian officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Officials have previously said a group known as the 400 Mawozo demanded a ransom of $ 1 million per person. A man who identified himself as the leader of the group said in a video posted to YouTube last month that he was ready to kill the hostages if he didn’t get what he wanted.
