SA vs IND, Test 2, Day 2: Shardul Thakur deflects Proteas

Not in vain is Shardul Thakur a “precedent” for bowling. It’s sharp, focused, and full of boyish excitement.

He stays in the shadow of his most famous compatriots, but when he is given the opportunity, he jumps in and asks questions about his “efforts” with the balls.

On Tuesday, the second day of the second Freedom Test at the Wanderers, Thakur proved more than a breakthrough player. He scored the best seven of his 61st career, taking center stage with bowling with poison.

Rhythm, energy and skill were seen as Mumbaikarra moved the ball to both sides, confused its length, bounced off.

Despite Thakur’s rich shot, Protea, in response to India’s 202nd, took a 27-run lead in the first inning.

The bowls were usually the enemy, but Cheteshwar Pujara (a 35-yard touchdown) counterattacked, squared off and led by Jansen, pulling Olivierri. And Ajinkya Rahane (11) survived.

On a lucky change day, Temba Bavuma and batsman Kyle Verreynne formed a couple.

Verreynne, who was firmly behind the line, seemed calm. The fifth wicket association in the 60th race ended when Thakur returned to Verreynn.

Bavuma started in the blows, driving Bumrah straight, driving Ashwin and turning right, shortening the length and pulling the off-spinner to six.

The aggressive Bauma (51-60) had bad luck with Rishabh Pant holding his leg brilliantly to the side, and Thakur again.
