Salah’s Egypt to the World Cup qualifiers

[ad_1]

Egypt advanced to the World Cup qualifiers in Africa on Friday after a 2-2 draw in Angola.

At that point, Egypt managed to win Group F with a match that was left over and Christmas denied them the chance to steal the playoffs in the final decisive match to be played in Egypt next week.

Christmas stunned Libya 1-0 just hours before the start of the Angola-Egypt match thanks to a Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang penalty early in the second half. Libya ended their hopes of qualifying and kept the modest chances of Christmas alive.

Egypt knew they only needed to equalize in their match and it was 2-0 in the 36th minute. But goals from Mohamed Elneny and Akram Tawfik, both set by captain Mohamed Salah, equalized.

Egypt joined Morocco, Senegal and Mali, who were already qualified for the 10-team knockout round in March. Only the winners of the group will advance to the African qualifiers, and the other six teams will be decided on Tuesday when the group stage ends.

The five winners of the two-legged qualifiers will represent Africa at the World Cup in Qatar.

Algeria’s 4-0 win over Djibouti put Africa’s top champions on the verge of the playoffs. The Algerians only need to draw at home in the final Group A match against Burkina Faso on Tuesday, and may qualify instead of Algeria with a win, setting up a group stand.

Youcef Belaïli scored the Algerian goal against Djibouti in the 29th minute, one minute after the penalty kick. Saïd Benrahma and Sofiane Feghouli scored two minutes apart at the end of the first half, and Islam Slimani came on as a substitute in the second half and entered the fourth to score the seventh goal of the group stage.

Slimani is the top scorer in the African standings, with Algeria scoring 23 goals in five games and conceding two.

When they face Algeria next week, Burkina Faso still have a chance to steal the playoff spot, but the Burkinina must face Algeria now after only a 1-1 draw at home to Niger on Friday.

Two goals came from the penalty spot – Youssouf Oumarou for Niger and Issoufou Dayo then equalized for Burkina Faso – but the Burkina Faso player lowered his head at the end of the pitch, knowing that it was more difficult for him to move forward.

There were two other playoffs in Africa on Friday, and neither of them had any effect on the playoffs. Morocco, which has already finished, beat Sudan 3-0. Guinea and Guinea-Bissau, who were already knocked out, drew 0-0.
