SEA Gamer Mall’s company culture, esports growth and hiring plans – Wired PR Lifestyle Story

In 2010, by Tommy Chieng he applied for a first job etan SEA Gamer Mall (SEAGM), which was founded in 2007, admitted that he was not a player either. In the interview, he also told the company’s founder that their website was far from impressive.
He continued to do so, however, with his research and ideas for improving the company’s operations. This surprised him as he would soon be his co-founder, who instead hired him as an inspector instead of dismissing him immediately.
It’s been a little over a decade since that event, but the values that Tommy showed and then showed are what he maintains today as CEO of SEAGM.
Namely, the policy of open doors, embracing change, adapting to current developments, promoting a family culture, ensuring the reconciliation of work and life, etc.
Care as a core value
At the core of what Tommy runs the company is surveillance. It appears in a variety of ways, from ensuring that its employees feel the ability to speak clearly with the head of their departments to providing employees with the funds and tools to maintain their well-being.
For example, employees are given plants to care for and are encouraged to share updates on SEAGM’s internal Facebook group. Then there’s the company’s “Thank You Month,” where employees are encouraged to actively show appreciation for colleagues.
When Tommy was COO, he also introduced an initiative called “SEAGM 3F” to cover employee well-being in the areas of family, fitness and finance.
Accordingly, the company began providing employees with a Family Departure Day Allowance (SWOT) with a quarterly allowance. This has been especially helpful for 24/7 customer service staff who work shift shifts and may not be able to spend time with family normally.
In addition, employees can also get a bonus for You (RM250 per month), which allows them to purchase a higher-speed Internet service to make WFH better.

Thus, these allowances encourage employees to pamper their families whenever they can. Employees can also spend a certain amount allocated (depending on the management’s decision) to join the gym, rent a sports court, or enjoy a Zumba class.
“The only thing we haven’t started yet is the financial aspect, but what we’re trying to do is help our employees buy their first home, etc.,” Tommy shared.
He explained that since the company is located in the small town of Sitiawan, many of the excellent students there go to KL to study and work, and those who did not get a similar grade will stay again.
The last students are the ones SEAGM takes to feed them from an early age. And, because of the company’s values and its culture, 177 of the 48 employees SEAGM has been with the company for over 5 years, starting in 2021.
This dedication to the company is why Tommy believes it is necessary to return to his employees, not only out of appreciation, but also out of a desire to see them flourish more.
The company that runs the conference
Fifi, HR Manager at SEAGM, told Vulcan Post: “It’s been close to a decade since I’ve been at SEAGM and that in itself says a lot about the company’s positive and thriving work culture, always a sense of comfort and a sense of comfort. “A sense of a family-oriented work environment.”

He also said that SEAGM is a place where groups and individual achievements and milestones are openly shared, not only with employees, but also with their relatives.
But even if successes are celebrated, that does not mean that mistakes and failures are ruled out.
Raymond, SEAGM’s head of marketing since 2019, told Vulcan Post: “Compared to my previous companies, at SEAGM, we are allowed to make mistakes, allowing us to try new things, even if we never did. [them] before”.
“But, we are also required to continue scouting, to continue to optimize and never [settling] for what we have done, even if it has been successful. ‘
It has also improved its ability to adapt quickly to ever-changing digital trends, which is key to identifying potential and profitable markets, monitoring regional performance, and keeping up-to-date versions of games.
One of SEAGM’s most recent hires, Olivia, who has been the Director of Electronic Commerce since May 2021, has already felt the impact of her company’s culture.
It stood out to him in particular, but how impressive and accessible his leaders were and how real their interactions and intentions were.
“After a few weeks, I feel like our colleagues are not just colleagues, we create real connections as friends and we also work better as a team.”

Building a data-based gaming ecosystem
Leaving aside the company’s culture, SEAGM’s intentions are clear:
- To be the best platform for the distribution of digital online goods and services worldwide,
- Continue to be known as a customer-based company,
- And empowering players to make a living by playing games.
While it’s important to continually improve its UX and UI, Tommy shared his strategy for proving the business in the future: building better experiences and relationships with existing and future users.
These approaches also need to be data-driven, which is why this year SEAGM is growing its data team and data capabilities. All of these efforts will serve to develop SEAGM’s game ecosystem plans.
It already has its own sports organization SEM9 With games that compete internationally in games like PUBG Mobile, Call of Duty Mobile, etc.
Trivia: Tommy shared that SEM9’s “9” can be read as follows.Long”(Jiu) means duration, and“ SEM ”actually means SEAGM Esports Malaysia. They are also the first letters of “SEM” nine, “nine” in Malay. At the same time, SEAGM aims to grow SEM9 in Malaysia in 8 other countries.
Currently, SEAGM is in talks with Alex Yoong, a professional Malaysian race driver who was in Formula One, to bring some members of his simulator race team to the SEM9 boat as well.
Earlier this year, he also started his own custom computer and hardware company, GLADAX, with the goal of eventually building its own branded products.
The overall goal is to be the core of the needs of all SEAGM players, whether it’s to buy gaming goods, whether it’s for an esports career, to buy computers and game hardware, and so on.
Growing up in the SEAGM family
To fully realize these dreams, Tommy and the rest of SEAGM now want to hire more people who believe in their mission and vision.
Key roles they want to fill a data engineer, data analyst, revenue manager and a business development manager.
In the last 4-5 months, they have already hired more than 30 people as their number of employees in their KL office increased.

A candidate would have an advantage if he shows that he drives himself in what he does, and being a player is also an advantage because it would take a shorter time to understand the company.
But most of all, Tommy prioritizes cultural adaptation. Skill sets are important, but he has learned that no matter how skilled someone is, it won’t work if they don’t align with the core values of the team.
This is very important for us so that we do not disrupt the harmony of the company, as disruptive characters will destroy the good things we have built in our company culture.
