BRAZIL (Reuters) – At least seven people have been killed and nine seriously injured when a stone wall collapsed on motor boats under a waterfall in southeastern Brazil on Saturday, firefighters said.
A rock tower suddenly broke through the canyon wall and crashed into several recreational vessels, sending a large wave into the Capitol Lake in the state of Minas Gerais.
Videos posted on social media showed tourists screaming as the stone column fell into the water, smashing two boats.
Authorities said three people were still missing while others were found missing by phone. Divers searched the lake.
People injured in the accident had broken bones and one was seriously injured in the head and face in hospital. Another 23 were treated for minor injuries, he said.
The region has been suffering from heavy rains for two weeks, which could have loosened the rock surface. On Saturday, a dike flooded an iron mine 300 miles east and cut off a major federal highway.
