(Reuters) – A sports car in Waukesha (Wisconsin) on Sunday in a Christmas parade hit more than 20 people, including children, and the city’s police chief said it caused “some deaths”.

Waukesha police chief Dan Thompson said an interested person was arrested and a suspicious vehicle was recovered in Waukesha, 32 miles west of Milwaukee, about 20 miles away.

Police said they have removed the order to take shelter.

“A red ammunition was entering the Christmas parade we were doing in the city center. More than 20 people were injured as a result of this incident,” Thompson told reporters.

Asked about the deaths, Thompson said, “I don’t have a specific number at this time.”

They did not know if the incident had anything to do with terrorism, he added.

A video posted on the event’s network showed a red SUV running through the parade, apparently exceeding more than a dozen people.

In a second video, police were shown firing at the vehicle as it collided with street fences.

A local CBS affiliate then posted a photo on Twitter (NYSE 🙂 of a hood with a wrinkled hood and hanging protection on the front, parked on a sidewalk, looking like it was a red SUV involved.

A woman told Milwaukee Fox6 television that the SUV hit a dance group of 9- to 15-year-old girls. He said the immediate reaction was silence, and then shouted, ran and controlled the injured, Fox6 reported.

A witness said the driver hit the “Dancing Grannies” and at least one person overturned the SUV’s hood, according to a WISN-TV ABC affiliate in Milwaukee.

Another witness estimated that the SUV was traveling at about 40 mph (64 km / h) when it hit the crowd, the TV channel said.

Photos and videos circulating on Waukesha Twitter followed police cars and ambulances flooding the street covered with Christmas lights after the incident. Crowds gathered on the sidewalks at dusk.

Some of the injured were taken by ambulance to the hospital, others by police and even more so by family and friends, Thompson said.

The incident happened around 16:39 (2239 GMT), police said.

“As we were returning between the buildings … we saw an SUV crossing, putting on a metal pedal and speeding along the route of the parade. And then we heard a loud bang, and deafening shouts and screams from people hitting the vehicle,” said Angelito Tenorio A councilor from West Allis told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
