A large fire broke out in the South African Parliament building in Cape Town.
Firefighters arrived at the building around 5:30 a.m. Sunday after they saw large GMT flames and a huge column of smoke.
Speaking to outside media outlets, Development Minister Patricia de Lille said it was not the National Assembly building that had caught fire, as the Cape Town Council had previously stated, but the Old Assembly.
“It is not the National Assembly that is on fire. What is coming out of it is an extractor that removes all the smoke from the National Assembly, “he told News 24 local media.
He added that most of the fires were under control.
A spokesman for the city’s emergency services earlier told AFP that the fire had spread to the National Assembly building.
“The fire is out of control and cracks have been reported in the walls of the building,” he said.

There was no sign of a fire.
According to News24, 36 firefighters were initially dispatched to the scene. Authorities later called for additional resources as they tried to put out the blaze.
