The main opposition party says the government is using the COVID-19 pandemic as a “cover” to limit the size of public meetings.
The Sri Lankan government has enacted new anti-coronary regulations to limit the size of public gatherings, days before the opposition intends to hold a mass demonstration in the capital.
The government has empowered the authorities to determine the maximum number of people who will gather at public meetings in an order released on Thursday.
So far, it is unclear how each local health authority will act and therefore whether the reunion will be allowed.
The main opposition party in the movement, Samagi Jana Balawegaya (United Popular Front), called for a protest in Colombo next Tuesday and came immediately.
The event would bring together crowds from across the country, and organizers expect more than 10,000 attendees.
It would also be the first huge public demonstration against the government since he was elected to power in August last year.
Asela Herath, Director General of Health Services, said the regulation is part of the measures taken to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
However, the number of COVID-19 deaths in Sri Lanka has dropped to an average of 20 per day from more than 200 in September, and the number of daily reported infections is around 600, compared to 4,000 in September.
“It is clear that the government does not want to protest and is using health regulations as a cover,” said SJB MP Nalin Bandara.
