Food chains are increasingly relying on innovative shipping alternatives as they seek to meet customer demand in a safe and efficient manner. In September, we announced our first partnership with a major U.S. food chain, The Save Mart Companies, to deliver immediately on demand from customers ’favorite products.
As students return to college, our robots have been busy providing contactless, fast and affordable delivery across campus. The number of self-employed shipments has grown, setting week-by-week records. In 2021 we plan to expand to many new universities.
As we move on to this next chapter, Lex Bayer will step down as CEO of Starship from June 2018 to October 2020. During his tenure, the number of shipments made by the Company’s autonomous robots went from 5,000 to more than 500,000, with more than 1. by a million miles. We are proud of Starship’s growth and achievements during this period and we are grateful for Lex’s contributions, and we wish him well in his future endeavors.
I will act as interim CEO while looking for the best person to lead the company into the future. Since founding with Starship in 2014 alongside Janus Friis, I am very proud to have been involved in the realization of our vision, for almost four years as CEO and most recently as CTO.
We expect to make our millionth autonomous delivery in early 2021. We have come this far thanks to our innovative and world-leading robot fleet, but more importantly, to the wonderful team of people who have turned our business into something today. I can’t wait to share more news about our Starship trip soon.
