England’s Ben Stokes said the knee problem that hampered him in the first game of the Ashes was the resurgence of an older injury and everyone is confident he can get into the second game in Adelaide this week.
Stokes scored five and 14 in Australia’s nine-wicket defeat at Brisbane and only threw 12 wicketless overs after hitting his knee.
It was his first competitive game since July, after a broken finger surgery after a mental health break and rehabilitation.

“It’s going to be a long break, but there’s no excuse,” Stokes wrote in his column. The mirror.
“I didn’t do anything except take a catch and throw a few balls, so it’s positive that I probably can’t do much worse.
“People will see me rubbing my knee from time to time while I’m on the field, but I’m calm. It’s an old injury that pops up from time to time, but I know how to handle it.
“It makes me a little uncomfortable … in and around my cartilage, but it’s worse than it looks, as far as I’m trying to get out as soon as possible.”
England skipper Joe Root has backed Stokes to make further contributions to the rest of the series and hoped the subject would not be limited.
“Obviously he hit his knee a little bit … so hopefully it’s just something that has shaken him now and you can see it with full intensity and he gives us every chance on the table,” Root said.
The second test of the five-game series will begin on Thursday.
