Military sources told Reuters that at least six Sudanese soldiers were killed in an attack in a disputed border region.
The Sudanese army says several Sudanese soldiers were killed in an attack by Ethiopian forces in a conflict-ridden border region.
In a statement on Saturday, the Sudanese army said “our forces were responsible for securing the Al-Fashaqa harvest … they were attacked by Ethiopian army forces and militia groups, intimidating farmers and trying to ruin the harvest season.”
Sudanese troops “repelled the attack” and “caused heavy losses in life and equipment” on the Ethiopian side.
But the attack left “several dead” among Sudanese forces, leaving no dead.
Reuters news agency, citing military sources, said at least six soldiers were killed in the attack.
Ethiopian officials were unable to immediately comment.
Al-Fashaqa is a border area that has long been cultivated by Ethiopian farmers, but claimed by Sudan.
The area bordering Ethiopia’s troubled Tigray region has seen deadly clashes between the two sides in recent years, but it has escalated last year.
Tensions rose after the fighting broke out in Tigray in November 2020 and sent tens of thousands of refugees fleeing to Sudan.
Since then Khartoum and Addis Ababa have been locked in a tense war of words over the region, exchanging allegations of violence and territorial violations.
The border conflict is fueling wider tensions in the region, including the controversial Great Dam of the Ethiopian Renaissance on the Blue Nile.
Sudan, along with Egypt, has been locked in a bitter dispute over the mega dam for a decade.
Both of the lower countries see most of the water that is dependent on the river as an existential threat.
