Australian coach Justin Langer believes his team can be restored as the best in the world as he prepares for a possible final match with Pakistan this week at the Twenty20 World Cup.
Langer’s side booked their place in the final quarters on Saturday as David Warner’s 89th loss brought the Australians together. he won eight wickets in the Antilles which placed second in Group 1 of the Super 12 phase of the competition.
“Not so long ago we were the best team in the world and some of those crickets show that we can be the best team in the world,” Langer told reporters.
“I think England is the leader at the moment and we have some exciting prospects. We are now taking great lessons from this tournament to continue playing T20 cricket, for this tournament and to move forward. ”

The Australians started the competition strong before suffering an eight-match defeat against England, and Aaron Finch’s former captain questioned his place in the play-offs. But the full victories in Bangladesh and the West Indies ended those doubts and the Australians are likely to go against Pakistan, who lead Group 2 with their final game against Scotland on Sunday in the semi-finals on Thursday.
‘Excellent cricket’
“It was great again last night, I think our last few games have been great cricket,” Langer said.
“The boys have really progressed. The experience against England was quite superfluous. We knew we had to do some work and it was a great way for the boys to respond to that, so it’s nice to be in the semi-finals.
“You can’t win if you’re not in the semi-finals. It’s nice to be sitting here, knowing we’re in a semi-final on Thursday. ‘
Pakistan have dominated Group 1, winning four games so far, and Langer is expected to clash in Dubai. “They have a very good team, just like we have, and they are well-directed,” he said.
“Their captain, Babar Azam, is a superstar of the game. They have some good paced players and a couple of good spins, so they’re balanced sides like us, so it has to be a great cricket match. ”
