Singapore’s largest taxi operator, ComfortDelGro Taxi, has announced today (January 5) that it will install 400 electric taxis this year; this number depends on the state of expansion of Singapore EV chargers.

However, by 2023, ComfortDelGro expects its fleet of electric vehicles (EVs) to grow to 1,000 electric taxis.

This means that about 10 percent of 10,000 taxis will be fully electric in the next two years. Another 70 percent will be hybrid cars as part of the company’s ongoing efforts in transition in recent years.

The company currently has only four electric taxis on its roads in Singapore as part of its first test in 2018.

Jackson Chiak, CEO of ComfortDelGro Taxi, said it was “time” for the company to start expanding its electric vehicle fleet.

“We have continued to challenge the evolution and advancement of EV technology and vehicles. One of the main concerns was the lack of infrastructure needed to ensure the success of the EV taxi fleet, “he added.

Today, ComfortDelGro has only four electric vehicle charging stations on its premises, although it will rise to 20 by the end of 2022.

In addition, Engie is partnering with French energy giant to install and operate nearly 500 EV chargers in 155 public car parks in Singapore.

Beyond Singapore, ComfortDelGro already has a fleet of 2,200 electric taxis across China. Its Australian and UK subsidiaries also use hybrid and electric buses, as is the case in Singapore.
