England opener Zak Crawley said he would be willing to undergo tougher health protocols to ensure the end of the Ashes series, adding that tourists had made the decision to go back to Australia hard in this week’s fourth test.

In the third round on Tuesday in Melbourne, a major start and a 14-knot victory gave Australia an unbeaten 3-0 lead in the series, with England playing proudly in the last two games.

The resurgence of COVID-19 in New South Wales has overshadowed the Sydney test, but Crawley said he was ready to tighten health protocols to move the match forward as planned on Wednesday.

“Personally, I would … I can’t talk about it for everyone, but it’s only been a couple of weeks and I want to play two tests,” he told reporters at Sydney Cricket Ground on Sunday.

“I’m one hundred percent sure I want to play this test, I’m certainly comfortable. The doctors say we’re in the right place to move forward and we fully support it.”

Coach Chris Silverwood was unable to travel to Sydney for the test after a COVID-19 appearance at the England camp, and the team was robbed of three specialist coaches.

Intentions to help Adam Hollioake were thwarted on Sunday when a close contact with the former England captain was positive for the virus.

Crawley said the players were united in training and there was a lot of determination to turn things around.

“Obviously, we lost in the MCG, losing the game and losing the series in three games,” he added.

“But all the tests are huge, especially the Ashes test down here, so we all want two wins from these next two games.

Crawley, who was called up for the third test but could only run 17 of his two innings, said less experienced England batters should not be afraid of Australian balls.

“I will definitely try and have more confidence,” he said. “I know I’m going to get a hundred points this week and that’s what I’m going to try to do.”
