US Open champion Emma Raducanu shares with coach less than two weeks after winning first place

Being the first to qualify for the U.S. Open and less than two weeks away, Emma Raducanu is leaving the 18-year-old tennis phenomenon to the person who helped her win the title. Raducanu wants to wait until the end of the season to choose a replacement with his coach, 47-year-old Andrew Richardson, for his lack of WTA tour experience.

Richardson and Raducanu worked together for two years at the youth level and met in a short-term deal in July. Under Richardson’s leadership, Raducanu became the 22nd WTA player and became the first female Grand Slam winner in Britain since 1977, the first qualifier to win the US Open.

That quick climb wasn’t enough for Raducanu to keep Richardson.

“At the time, I thought Andrew would be a great coach for testing, so we went to the United States, but I never dreamed of winning the U.S. Open and I did have a race,” Raducanu said. “And now I’m 22nd in the world, and that’s pretty crazy for me.”

Raducanu as reported he doesn’t have a Richardson replacement in mind, but he’s looking for someone with significant experience on the WTA tour. Former Cup player Richardson Davis doesn’t quite have that, as he only competed in three Grand Slam events – all at Wimbledon – and once passed the first round.

It’s an ordinary crowd “you’re the one around” and the newly crowned US Open champion Raducanu is keeping those words in mind when looking for a tournament-caliber player as his coach.

“I’m looking for someone who’s been at that level and knows what he needs,” Raducanu said. “And especially since I’m very new right now, I really need someone to guide me through what I’ve already experienced.”

Raducanu has yet to compete since winning the U.S. Open – except for a friendly doubles match with the Duchess of Cambridge. Kate Middleton – and he still has no timeline for his return. That timeline, however, could appear quite soon.

“I’ll decide where I’m going in the next few days, but wherever I play, I’ll make sure I’m ready,” Raducanu said. “I don’t want to jump into things too soon.”

It helped him win the Grand Slam title except when it came to leaving the coach.
