Israel’s latest political drama exacerbates the plight of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is on trial on charges of corruption.

Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid on Wednesday told the president that he could form a coalition government in a 12-year term that will end with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

It was also agreed to join the United Arab List in the coalition. Forming a government would be the first time in Israel’s history that an independent Arab party becomes a member of the government.

Netanyahu, who has been in power for the past 12 years, has sought to discredit other right-wingers negotiating with Bennett and Lapid, saying they are jeopardizing Israel’s security.
