Florida joins US states in banning transgender girls from sports LGBTQ News

The Florida governor’s action comes at the start of the U.S. ‘Pride Month’, it’s officially time to celebrate LGBTQ rights.

Florida on Tuesday became the largest U.S. state to ban transgender women and girls from participating in school sports. Republican-led statesmen accused of equal rights were provocative and discriminatory.

Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, who had close ties to former President Donald Trump, signed the bill on the first day of Pride Month, which celebrates the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) community.

DeSantis signed the bill at an event at a Christian school in Jacksonville, where she was joined by some teenage female athletes. She said the law is necessary to ensure fairness for women involved in sports across the state.

“I can say this: In Florida, girls will do girls’ sports and boys will do boys ’sports,” the governor said. “We’re going to go based on biology, not based on ideology when we’re doing sports.”

Proponents of the sports bill say transgender women athletes have an unfair advantage because they were named men at birth but have since made the transition.

The Human Rights Campaign, the advocacy group, has said it will sue the law on the basis of a “false and discriminatory premise” that threatens the well-being of transgender children.
