Bhiri is being “stripped of his medication” and “his life is threatened,” Ennahdha officials say.
Tunisian politician Noureddine Bhiri has been taken to hospital after a “serious condition” he was arrested by street-wearing agents on Friday in Tunis, activists and lawmakers said.
Bhiri is in “critical condition” and in “intensive care” at a hospital in northern Bizerte, lawyer and politician Samir Dilou told AFP news agency on Sunday.

The Interior Ministry reports that two people have been arrested at home without being identified. He said the move was “a precautionary measure mandated by the need to safeguard national security”.
Saied has been president accused of coup in July last year when the Ennahdha-backed government was overthrown and parliament was overthrown.
He later took steps regulated by decree, and swore in early December that political system reform would move forward.
Ennahdha leader Rached Ghannouchi, who is also the speaker of the ousted parliament, issued a letter to the Tunisian president asking for urgent information on Bhiri’s situation and his release.
“After refusing to disclose his whereabouts … we emphasize that it is your responsibility to reveal his current condition,” Ghannouchi wrote in a letter to the Ennahdha website on Sunday.
He called on Saied to “visit a medical and human rights team … and we urge you to be released immediately.”
Dr. Mondher Lounissi, a member of Ennahdha’s executive office, said in a statement that Bhiri has a number of chronic illnesses, including diabetes and high blood pressure.
“Her medication has been taken away,” and “her life is in danger,” Lounissi said at a news conference, adding that Bhiri usually takes 16 pills a day.
Lounissi called on the Red Moon and international organizations to intervene on Bhiri’s behalf, calling his situation “inhumane.”

Another senior member of Ennahdha, Said Ferjani, told AFP that “a former cabinet minister has been treated like this … it is dangerous for Tunisia and the region.”
Lawmaker Saida Ounissi had earlier tweeted that Bhiri had been kept in a “secret location” since her arrest and had not been charged.
Since Saied’s involvement, several politicians and top businessmen have been arrested or tried, many of them accused of corruption or defamation.
Rights groups have criticized the use of some of these arrests and the use of military courts to resolve cases.
Saied has vowed to defend the rights and freedoms gained during the 2011 Tunisian revolution, which led to the beginning of democracy and the uprising of the Arab Spring in the region.
