U-19 WC: Afghanistan, Bangladesh advance to the quarterfinals

Bangladesh won a vital match to qualify for the quarter-finals of the Under-19 World Cup, winning nine wickets against the BAC (DLS method).

The Bangladeshi bowlers worked together to limit the BAC to 148. The runner-up renewed his goal with 61 extra balls on Saturday.

In one fell swoop, the BAC slipped to eight within two to three overs. Captains Dhruv Parashar and Alishan Sharafu combined to stabilize the ship, adding 44 races for the third wicket. Punya Mehra then scored 43 points but was unable to find a pair to stay with as she fell in the last seven wickets in 98 runs. Ripon Mondol had the best numbers of all the balls in Bangladesh, with 31 31.

Bangladesh’s top order didn’t break a sweat in the chase, with only 25 runners missing from the first wicker drop.

Bangladesh’s next task is the quarter-finals against India on January 29th.

Afghanistan excludes Zimbabwe

Captain Suliman Safi helped Afghanistan win Zimbabwe to advance to the Group C quarter-finals.

Safi scored 111 (118b, 14×4 3×6) to give Afghanistan a 261 lead in the sixth round, which he ruled out in the final inning. The Afghan bowlers, led by Nangeyalia Khan spinnera (4 30), threw Zimbabwe 152 overs 36.4 overs.

Alex Falao was Zimbabwe’s pick of the balls as he took three of his 10 overs to 54 to advance to the tournament’s eight wickets. Matthew Welch scored Zimbabwe’s best goal, 53. They scored in the double-digit double of the three batters.

Left arm spinner Nangeyalia Kharote was the most successful bowler in Afghanistan, picking four wickets.

Also in Group C, Pakistan won nine wickets against Papua New Guinea. Muhammad Shehzad took five wickets and Ahmed Khan took three as he threw PNG 50 over 22.4 overs. Pakistan went after the total for losing a wicket.

Pakistan will host Australia on 28 January.
