Kate Ridgway, chief curator of the Virginia Department of Historical Resources, said the size and materials of the box match the historical accounts.

As the inside content was downloaded on Tuesday, it appears to have matched the description of the 1887 time capsule that experts were looking for.

Records maintained by the Library of Virginia suggested that dozens of Richmond residents, organizations, and businesses contributed about 60 objects to the capsule, among others. Memoirs of the Confederacy.

“It looks like this is the box we were expecting,” Ridgway told reporters.

The box was found on Monday and carefully removed from the monument site, ending a lengthy search for the fugitive capsule.

“They found it! This is probably the time capsule everyone was looking for, “Governor Ralph Northam said in a tweet after pulling out of the box.

Ridgway said a box weighing 16.6 kg (36 lbs) was found in the water in a small hole in the pedestal. The contents were wet, but “not soup,” Ridgway said, adding, “I think it’s in better condition than we expected.”

News in the late 1800s determined that the time capsule was placed at the base of the pedestal, and image tests at the beginning of the year confirmed its existence. But during the long search Removal of the September statue it came out empty.

Earlier this month, Northam ordered the pedestal also remove, and the team working on the project started looking for the artifact again.

Historical records have led to speculation that the capsule may contain a strange and historically significant picture of the deceased. President Abraham Lincoln. A line in a newspaper article also included “a picture of Lincoln lying in his coffin.”

New York City Hall April 24, 1865.

The contents of the well-wrapped box were spread out from the moisture and stuck to each other, which made it difficult to disassemble, so the Conservatives decided to relieve the pressure by cutting off one side.

“It’s not ideal, but it’s the way it is,” Ridgway said.

Along with several water-filled books and documents, there was an envelope of Confederate money in the box, carefully preserved by the Conservatives, and two works of art: a Masonic symbol and Confederate flag Stonewall is said to have been made from a tree that grew on the original tomb of General Jackson.
