At least seven people were killed and nine others injured in a bomb blast near the city of Herat, authorities said.
At least seven people have been killed in a bomb blast in the western Afghan city of Herat, authorities said.
“Four women were among the seven dead,” Herat provincial hospital chief Arif Jalali told AFP news agency on Saturday.
Taliban commander Mawlawi Ansari told the Reuters news agency that nine people had been injured.
The explosion was confirmed by Herat’s intelligence office.
“Initial reports indicate that it was a sticky bomb attached to the fuel tank of the passenger vehicle,” said Sabit Harwi, a spokesman for the office.
Herat’s provincial police and culture department also confirmed the bomb blast. No immediate responsibility was claimed for the attack.
Security in Afghanistan has greatly improved since the Taliban took over the capital Kabul since the end of a 20-year armed war in August.
However, several attacks have been reported weekly across the country, including some claimed by the ISIL regional chapter (ISIS). Islamic State in Khorasan Province, ISKP (ISIS-K).
ISKP has been regularly accused targeting Shia Hazara in the country a community with deadly attacks, and the community also lives in an area that exploded on Saturday near a bus stop.
Herat is the third largest city in the country, near the Iranian border, but has been relatively quiet in recent months.
In addition to security concerns, Afghanistan’s economy remains in dire straits as the Taliban’s possession has dried up as the country’s aid has dried up. The international community is keen to see the US impose sanctions on some of its leaders.
United Nations it is estimated that there are nearly 23 million Afghans -about 55 percent of the population- is suffering from severe hunger, and nearly nine million are at risk of starvation as winter approaches.
