Sudan and Egypt want the international community to intervene before Ethiopia’s intentions to move forward with the second filling of the dam in the summer.

Sudan has asked the United Nations Security Council to gather and discuss the huge dam that Ethiopia is building on the Blue Nile.

Ethiopia is setting hopes for economic development and energy generation in the great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), but the two countries downstream – Egypt and Sudan – are concerned and are seeking a binding agreement to fill and operate the dam.

Egypt relies on the Nile River for 90% of its fresh water and sees the dam as an existential threat.

Sudan is concerned about the operation of the Nile dam and water stations.

On Tuesday, Sudanese Foreign Minister Mariam Sadiq al-Mahdi called on the Security Council to discuss the GERD and hold a session on “the safety of millions of people and its impact” as soon as possible, “in a government note.”

In a letter, Al-Mahdi called on the head of the council to stop the “unilateral” fulfillment of the dam in Ethiopia, which “exacerbates the conflict and poses a threat to regional and international peace and security,” the document added.

Ethiopian officials have not yet commented on the letter.

Earlier this month, Sudan and Egypt agreed to work together at all levels to encourage Ethiopia to negotiate a “serious” deal, following talks stalled by the African Union.

Both countries called on the international community to intervene.

The Arab states have asked the Security Council to discuss the debate and Ethiopia intends to proceed with the second filling of the dam this summer, even without an agreement with Sudan and Egypt.

Ethiopia has completely rejected the Arab League resolution.

UN Arab League envoy Maged Abdel Fattah said on Tuesday evening that Sudan and Egypt are working on a draft resolution on the GERD Security Council if Ethiopia does not reach an agreement.

Arab states will be pressured to approve the draft resolution, Fattah Sada Elbalad told Egyptian television channel that he does not expect the world powers to block it.

Ethiopia had previously rejected calls from Egypt and Sudan to involve mediators outside the African Union.

Sudan said earlier in June that a provisional partial agreement on the $ 1 million dam was open, with specific conditions.
