Australian captain Pat Cummins did not know how to direct his anger after a diner tested positive for COVID-19, forcing him to miss the second Ashes Test in Adelaide.
Cummins was going to dinner with his friend Harry Conway, who plays for the Adelaide Strikers BBL franchise, at a restaurant in Adelaide before the second Test, when a patron of the nearby table identified COVID-19 as a positive case.
“I was really angry (I was) – but I don’t know with whom,” said Cummins, who has returned as a side captain in the Boxing Day Test. Western Australia.
“There was no one to blame. Once it was revealed, the state regulates, you have to follow them.”

Cummins was negative on RT-PCR, but was asked to isolate himself under South Australian COVID-19 rules, forcing him to withdraw from the Adelaide match this morning.
“We knew it could explode at some stage in this series. I didn’t think – or expected – that it would be me,” said the 28-year-old, who missed a home test in about five years.
“You follow the protocols, but there was almost no COVID around, so I didn’t consider it at all until the guy showed up next to me and said he was positive.
“No one did anything wrong. The patient flew to Adelaide for a couple of days to enjoy cricket; I felt very bad about him too.”

Cummins teammates Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon also missed the game because they had to meet for dinner at the same restaurant, but the skipper did not look at the phone for 40 minutes, so they both dined separately.
“They were angry; they smelled it and sat in the back,” he said of Lyon and Starc.
“He’s a single player, because the news is a little bit bigger because of COVID and the captain, but it’s not the end of the world, it’s not a big change.”
Cummins thought he was going to face it, but once he saw the Test match broadcast on TV, he felt angry again.
“Then after about an hour (watching Test on TV) I was pretty angry, I’d rather be away,” he said.
“But it was good. It was a different perspective.”
Australia leads in a two-match series of 2-0.
