I would like to pick Dravid’s brain: Rachin

New Zealand youngster Rachin Ravindra said on Thursday that his name was not linked to Rahul Dravid, but he hoped to pick the head coach of India’s coach during the T20I series.

Rachin celebrated his 22nd birthday on Thursday when asked at a virtual media conference here if his name had anything to do with Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar, two of India’s biggest cricketers.

“Actually, I’m not really sure. I’ve never really asked my mother and father where the name comes from … I think you should ask them,” she said.

Rachin Wellington was born to Indian parents Ravi Krishnamurthy and Deepa Krishnamurthy, both of whom moved to Bangalore in the 1990s.

Rachin made his New Zealand debut at the 2016 U-19 World Cup as well as the 2018 U-19 Cricket World Cup and during that time met Dravid who was India’s youth coach.

“Yes, Dravid is an absolute legend at stake and I played a bit of cricket against him when he was training at India An and when he came to New Zealand a couple of years ago.”

Rachin made his international debut against Bangladesh earlier this year when he lost a five-match T20 series in Bangladesh 2-3.

He was part of the New Zealand national team that took on India in the final of the World Test Championship, but in June XI.

Describing the opportunity to play in his backyard against India, he said: “Nations of all kinds always want to be able to play in India and I think it has been a pretty surreal experience so far. This T20 is very special.”

Rachin’s left arm spinner also spoke about India’s spin heritage and said Ravichandran Ashwin’s spinner is very special.

“They’ve been doing it for a long time. They’re world-class spinners, especially Ashwin. He’s set a tremendous record and he’s been around for a long time and the variations are tremendous. Personally, I haven’t been in contact and I would. I like to pick his brain at any time.” he added.
