Chinese plant activity rises in December Manufacturing

Chinese manufacturing has been hampered by deficiencies in some components and disrupted shipping.

Chinese plant activity rose in December as supply disruptions eased and export demand weakened, a survey showed on Friday.

The monthly purchasing managers ’index provided by the National Statistics Agency and an industry group rose to 50.3 from the November 50.1 to 100-point scale, and numbers above 50 accelerate activity.

Chinese manufacturing has hampered deficiencies in some components including semiconductors and interruptions in shipments. Some areas have ordered the temporary closure of factories since September to meet official energy efficiency targets.

Recovery “clearer”

The size of new orders improved from 49.4 to 49.7 in November, according to the China Logistics and Procurement Federation and the National Bureau of Statistics, although demand was still weak. The export order index fell to 48.1 from 48.5.

“The overall recovery of China’s economy is clearer,” said economist Zhang Liqun in a statement issued by the federation. However, he said that the country needs to “increase the overall effect of the policy of expanding domestic demand” and that industrial supply should go easily.
