Amid celebrations of the centenary of the ruling Communist Party, Chinese President Xi Jinping has presented medals to loyal party members and called for adherence to Marxism.
Xi stressed the economic and political prominence that China has had since the reforms held more than 40 years ago after a prolific celebration at Beijing’s Olympic Stadium on Tuesday night.
While the private industry was being liberated, the ruling party has maintained an iron grip on political power, along with preferential policies with state-owned enterprises.
“All party members should believe in Marxism and socialism with Chinese characteristics as the goal of their lives,” Xi said in a speech to the medal winners. The celebrations will end with a memorial service to be held in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square on Thursday.
In the nine years he led the party, Xi has established himself as China’s most powerful ruler since Mao Zedong, who defeated the Chiang Kai-shek Nationalist People’s Republic in 1949 to form a civil war.
Like Mao, Xi is not tied to term limits and, at 68, will likely remain in office for years to come.
While repressing signs of political opposition at home and pushing the campaign against corruption, it has advanced an increasingly proactive foreign policy that seeks to command control over the South China Sea, intimidating Taiwan into accepting control of Beijing and joining Russia for U.S. influence on international affairs.
