Artist Heather Ross She lives in Forestburgh, New York, with her husband, TC, and their daughter, Bee. “When we first entered, this house was a disaster,” he says. “I liked to take something I forgot and make it beautiful.” Here, Catskills gives us a look inside the fairy house.
Slow decoration: It took all the money we had to buy and insulate this house, so everything else had to happen gradually over the last 10 years. It seems like this house will only let us bring old things, so almost all of our furniture is from my grandparents, antique stores, flea markets or Craigslist.
In old homes: My husband and I moved a lot as children. I would not be able to describe my childhood bedroom because I had a lot in different states. I think that’s why we were both attracted to the house that had history.
INTRODUCTION
Lamp: Restoration Hardware.
Color: I spent my first childhood in Vermont. Vermont summer is this short sacred week, so I would spend the whole year thinking about it. The colors looked miraculous after a long winter. I am still attracted to the rich alpine greens. When I design thingsI want to remember lying in the grass when I was six years old.
Carpets: Carpet.
They do not agree: Runners up the stairs deliberately do not match. I like it when things aren’t perfect. I like that when houses seem to have a layered history, things from all decades are in the same room. Also, I know this is not an original thought, but I think if you buy the ones you love and use them, everything will come together.
About family history: That’s the portrait of Grandma’s engagement on the wall. We had a very formal relationship because she wasn’t particularly fond of children. There are constantly kids in this room and I love to look the way I always remember: selfless.
LIVING ROOM
Sofa: Restoration Hardware.
Family room: This room next to the kitchen was supposed to be a formal dining room, but we didn’t have any use for it, so we turned it into a large family room. In winter, New York Times and a roar of fire is the room for the whole day.
About Josef Frank: The pillows are made of fabric designed by Josef Frank, and I think they want to make a statement as a work of art. Buying his stuff was prohibitively expensive, but now Etsy sellers they are making products with their fabrics at reasonable prices.
Printed butterfly: Natural curiosities. Quilt: Denyse Schmidt.
When drawing from nature: This house can sometimes be dark and serious, so pieces like this butterfly print add a nice balance. A big part of my work comes from the natural world – nature hypnotized me as a child and continues to inspire me every day.
OFFICE
Ottoman: handmade Pendleton blanket. Carpet: Carpet. Wallpaper: Nathalie Lete Anthropologie, similar.
DIY artwork: The owl print really John Derian Picture Book, and then we made the frame. The book was made for people for that.
KITCHEN

In cooking: I try to cook alone. As I was growing up, my mother had an amazing vegetable garden, which made me a vegetable snob. Luckily, there are so many wonderful farms in Catskill, especially in the summer. When we moved in, I had dreams of turning this room into a beautiful English kitchen, but like everything else, we gradually ended up covering it together.

In misleading wallpapers: The back cover is part of the line of wallpaper my company is launching; it really is made from a group of collaged photographs it can be confused with the real quilt and almost the real one.
To the guests of the house: We keep the fridge stocked with milk, beer and champagne because we have people here all the time and we want things to be as self-service and efficient as possible. What’s in the fridge is free play.
On home gifts: The wooden spoon frame was a Father’s Day gift for my husband, TC. We found some old spoons and painted portraits with them Martha Stewart handcrafted painting. My daughter, Bee, made mine and my father’s; and I made the Bee. I love how he drew my hair despite being black. When I told him I didn’t have black hair, he said, “Well, you’re under it!”
Summer: In the photo that appears in the fridge, my sister and cousins are pictured in the pool next to their grandparents ’house. I keep it here because it reminds me of how my childhood summers went: no one ever looks at the clock, there is no structure.
DAUGHTER’S BEDROOM
In a reading corner: The ten-year-old Bee is the main reader, so we once had the idea to make his bedroom feel like a library and he took it upon himself. She sleeps on the corner and the chair is there to kiss me good night. We call it the “good day kiss window”.
Bed: Jenny Lind Children’s bed: similar. Peel and paste ponies mural: Heather Ross.
In my favorite books: The Bee really has graphic novels. Lately, she has loved the huge interpretation of the image Harry Potter series. It is very fascinating with its wide format and completely rich illustrations.
PARENTS ROOM
Bed: Nani Iro and Freedom in London, similar. Sofa: Ceramic barn, similar. Lantern: World Market, similar.
In the thinking system: This house was designed before air conditioning, which was built to keep it warm in winter and cool in summer. On hot days we open the windows on the other side of our bedroom and house, and the fresh winds are blown over you. Most of these old places are designed that way, the system is amazing.
PORTAL
In a summer camp setting: We have a magical sleeping porch with eight sleeping camps and beds and beds that feel like camping. My grandmother has 20 great-grandchildren, ages 2 to 25, and a boy. This portal is a common summer destination. There is always someone sleeping.
In lake life: There is a collective agreement in the community that you can’t see if you have a house next to the lake tik because we want the lake to feel like 100 years ago.
