Marnus Labuschagne was dismissed as a candidate for leadership after Tim Paine resigned as Australia’s Test captain, but the batter said he was happy to focus on making big races against hostile Ashes.
Although there were only 18 tests in his career, former Labuschagne players and experts introduced him as the future captain, but he was not offered an interview by a Cricket Australia panel, which named Pat Patmumm and Steve Smith as vice-captain last week.
If Labuschagne’s pride was hurt, the 27-year-old hid well when asked about his applause in Brisbane on Friday. “No, I wasn’t disappointed,” Labuschagn told reporters.

“I think there are two very good leaders and some very good candidates. (Cummins) will do a great job and has a lot of support from Steve as the captain and all the major players on the team. For now my job is to focus consistently on scoring for Australia and I am happy to have my task for now.
“You don’t need a degree to be a team leader.”
Stratospheric average
Just over two years after Ashes in 2019, Labuschagne has established itself as Australia’s No. 3 and one of the best batsmen in the world with an average stratosphere of over 60.

Ash has come a long way since his first appearance, when he became a substitute for Lord’s first cricket Test Test cricket after a rebound from Smith Jofra Archer. Archer hit Labuschagne on the second ball of his helmet, but he cleared the dust and scored an impressive 59 in the second inning of Australia, leveling the game for the tourists and maintaining a crucial 1-0 advantage in the series.
While Smith dominated the series with a 774 race, Labuschagne did a great job of helping to keep the ballot box in Australia for half a century in England for the first time in almost two decades.
He has since collected five hundred, including 215 against New Zealand, and sees England as the main problem to be solved in the series that will begin next week in Gabban. “The goal is on your back now that you’re running and you’re the main part of that team,” Labuschagn said.
