At least 12 people have been killed and 13 injured in a rally on Saturday morning at a religious shrine in Kashmir administered by India, authorities said.

“At least 12 people have been killed and 13 injured,” a senior government official told AFP, anonymously.

“Bessaria could have been bigger because the trail to the top of the mountain was full of devotees trying to make the usual New Year’s Eve visits and prayers,” he said.

India’s official CNN-News18 Twitter account also reported the allegations and the deaths. Images broadcast by television also showed several ambulances at the scene of the incident.

Another disaster management official confirmed the death toll, saying the incident happened around 2:45 a.m. (9:15 p.m. GMT).

“The government has ordered a high-level investigation into the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi shrine incident,” he said.

“He is deeply saddened by the loss of life,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Twitter, adding that he was in contact with local authorities.

“Condolences to the bereaved families. May the wounded be healed soon, ”said Modik.
