The Conservative People’s Party of the Government has appointed Interior Minister Alexander Schallenberg after two months to replace Chancellor.

The Conservative People’s Party of the Austrian Government (OVP) has elected the current Minister of the Interior Karl Nehammer, a strong immigrant, to lead them and the country, following a wave of resignations by senior officials led by Sebastian Kurz.

Nehammer, 49, said on Friday that the OVP had unanimously chosen him as the leader of the Kurz party and as the new chancellor of Austria to lead the OVP coalition government.

Kurz, who he went down after being implicated in the corruption scandal as rector in October, he announced on Thursday that he would step down as head of the OVP. The 35-year-old, who denies having done anything wrong, said he wanted to dedicate time to his family.

His decision came as a surprise to the party, and two of his closest allies, new chancellor Alexander Schallenberg and finance minister Gernot Bluemel, also said so. resigned. Schallenberg had been working for less than two months.

But in a nod to continuity, Nehammer said on Friday that since 2017, Kurz has been planning to keep the issues of law and order in both stays as chancellor.

“It is important for me, as the new leader of the People’s Party, to maintain our line, to say clearly what is necessary in terms of migration and asylum, in terms of the security of the people in our country. the country, ”he said at a news conference.

Nehammer said tackling coronavirus would also be a top priority. He is currently in Austria confinement authorities want to ease the pressure on hospitals with rising infection rates.

It was not immediately clear when he would be sworn in as chancellor. The Austrian president must first accept Nehammer’s appointment, but that is expected to be a formality.

Falling in support

Nehammer said he would work closely with President Alexander Van der Bellen, who swears by the minister and oversees the transition period, to appoint his Conservative minister as soon as possible.

Van der Bellen is unlikely to oppose Nehammer’s selection. The Greens, members of the coalition, have said their group will remain unchanged.

Nehammer said Magnus Brunner had been appointed party official as finance minister, and Schallenberg would return to his former job as foreign minister.

Since the investigation into Kurz, most polls show that the OVP has lost at least a 10 percentage point lead over its closest rivals, the opposition Social Democrat. Now they are neck and neck.

Neither the OVP nor the Greens have any apparent interest in the election, according to opinion polls, as both would lose seats. But the tensions between them are such that few analysts expect their government to last until the end of this parliament in 2023.
