While Djokovic was hoping for a trip to the quarterfinals, Karatsev was not. Ranked 114th in the world, Karatsev had to win three games to qualify for the Australian Open. Entering the 2021 Australian Open section, he has been impressive, winning his first three games in straight sets, including the wrath of eighth-ranked Diego Schwartzman in the third round. Karatsev pulled out another shocker in the fourth round, wrapped in two sets to anger the No. 20 seed Felix Auger-Aliassime.

In the quarterfinals, Karatshev took advantage of Grigor Dimitrov’s back injury to No. 18 to win in four sets. Along with winning, he became the first male player in the Open era to make a slam semi-final on his first porch.
