US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping have begun their first bilateral meeting.
The two men are talking at a video conference at a time when relations between the two countries are deteriorating, in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Beijing, in the Xinjiang region of the Xinjiang region, mainly for the treatment of Muslim Uighurs.
Biden began the virtual meeting by saying that their responsibility as leaders is to ensure that relations between China and the US do not turn into an open conflict.
Xi said the two countries have faced many challenges together and need to increase communication and cooperation.
In a call prior to the meeting of US Secretary of State Antony Blink, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi highlighted Taiwan as the main point of discussion between the two countries. China claims that the island, a self-governing democracy of more than 23 million people, is its own.
Meetings are expected to continue for a few hours. Biden and Xik have had phone conversations before.
