A first-rate competition modeled by Hundred could help the English Test party “return to its former glory” with former skipper Kevin Pieters.

“In The Hundred, the ECB has created a competition of some sort of value.
“They introduced new people to the games, and I can say that the players will improve significantly by appearing alongside other big ones. It’s a very valuable experience.” He advised the management to hold a similar tournament in the format of the red ball, adding that it would be beneficial for the English players to meet with top foreign players.
“Now they have to present a similar franchise competition for red ball cricket, as the best ones play against the best ones every week.
“They would make money available to attract some of the best foreign players in the world, and the top English players would benefit from playing alongside them.
“It would be a commercial and exciting competition that would drive the improvement of the standard and get people back from the gates.” He proposed an eight-team league round, where the pitches encourage a strong batting technique.

“The pitch is controlled by the ECB, as it does not see the main requirements for the ball as it is today.
“We need to have good pitches that reward and encourage strong batting techniques that bathe for a long time, and that require the skill of the players to take on wickets.” Pietersen added that the regional system can function as a “feeding system” where players are developed until they are ready to step up.
“I promise you that today’s England team and the best youngsters in the system still see Test cricket, especially Ashes cricket as the pinnacle.

“It’s no use blaming Joe Root for what happened in Australia. He’s the only batsman in that team and he’s unprepared and has led a low-quality team to the Ashes series. It was a hopeless task.
“Things are not going to change by sticking the next one out of the regional cricket and sticking to open one. It has failed too many times now.
“This franchise competition would be a great opportunity to improve the red cricket standard, make home cricket interesting again for the public, and the only way for the ECB to prove that it values Test cricket and values a paying customer.”
