Nicaraguan Foreign Minister Denis Moncada welcomed Chinese officials in Managua, including Beijing’s top diplomat.
China has reopened its embassy in Nicaragua, a week after the Central American country changed its diplomatic recognition from Beijing to Taiwan.
This change was a political victory for China, which claims that Taiwan is part of its territory and has increased pressure to isolate the self-governing island on the international stage.
Three weeks ago, the announcement left Taiwan with only 14 diplomatic allies, although Taipei is strengthening ties with several unofficial friends in the West, including the United States.
Nicaraguan Foreign Minister Denis Moncada said at the reopening of the embassy, ”You are welcome in our Nicaragua … the two countries are sure to have a future of success and victory in our family relations.”
The new Chinese embassy will be under the command of Yu Buren and will be inaugurated at the ceremony along with Moncada and other officials, including President Daniel Ortega’s son and adviser Laureano Ortega.
During a virtual meeting with Moncada on Friday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that Beijing welcomed and appreciated Nicaragua’s correct decision.
There were times and conditions for that to happen, Wang China Daily reported.
China has spent decades pushing for Taiwan’s increasingly small diplomatic allies, including three more in Latin America in recent years: Panama, El Salvador and the Dominican Republic.
On December 9, the Ortega administration announced that it was pursuing Nicaragua.
“The People’s Republic of China is the only legitimate government that represents the whole of China, and Taiwan is an undeniable part of China’s territory,” Moncada said at the time.
A Marxist fireman in his youth, Ortega ruled Nicaragua from 1979 to 1990.
He had previously changed his status to China in 1985, but was replaced by an heir, Violeta Chamorro, five years later.
Restoring relations with China comes as US and European Union sanctions increase against Nicaragua. Ortega won his fourth term in the November election in which his main rivals were in jail.
