Fires in a food factory in Bangladesh it killed at least 43 people, police said Friday, when emergency services removed the bodies while the building was still on fire.

The fire at a factory in Rupganj, an industry 25 km (15 miles) east of the capital Dhaka, started on Thursday evening and was burning almost 24 hours later.

Many of the 30 injured jumped from the upper floors of the complex.

It was not clear how many people were trapped inside, although outside relatives said they were afraid that other relatives and other factory workers would run away.

Mohammad Saiful, a factory worker who fled, said there were dozens of people when the fire broke out.

“On the third floor, the doors to the two stairwells were closed. Other colleagues are saying there were 48 people inside. I don’t know what happened to them, ”he said.

Police initially reported three dead, but it went up dramatically as firefighters reached the upper floors and began pulling out dozens of trapped workers.

The burn victims were piled in an ambulance fleet to be taken to the morgue amid the shouts and tears of the people they were seeing in the streets.

Police blocked the surrounding roads and collided with agents scattered hundreds of people.

Fires are common in Bangladesh due to quiet compliance with safety regulations. In February 2019, 70 people were killed when hell was ripped off some apartment blocks in Daca.
