The repeated delays in the clash between the President and the Prime Minister have been a matter of international concern.
Somali leaders have announced they have reached an agreement to end parliamentary elections on February 25, following repeated delays that have threatened the country’s stability.
The agreement was reached on Sunday after several days of talks with Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble to end the impasse over the election.
“Continuous elections in the House of Commons [lower house] It will be completed from January 15 to February 25, 2022, ”he said in a statement following talks in the capital Mogadishu.
Roble and Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed, the president of Somalia, better known by his nickname Farmaajo, have been debating the long-delayed elections, fearing that their clashes could lead to violence.
The international community has sounded the alarm over the crisis, fearing the country’s stability as it continues to face a deadly armed uprising by the Al-Shabab armed group.
The quarrel between the two leaders erupted last month over Farmaajo extended Roble, the man he elected as prime minister in September 2020.
But Roble accused the president of violating the constitution and attempting a “coup attempt” and disobeying the order, while Farmaajo himself called on opposition leaders to step down.
Farmaajo’s four-year term ended February 2021, but parliament extended the debate in April, sparking deadly gunfire on the streets of Mogadishu, with some rivals taking power for granted.
Roble then set a new timetable for the vote, but in the months that followed, the couple’s fierce competition diverted the polls again.
They agreed to bury the detainee in October, and issued a joint call to speed up the election process.
But their quarrel was revealed again when Farmaajo dismissed Roble, who was accused of corruption for his involvement in the investigation into the military-owned land scandal.
Elections in Somalia follow a complex cross-cutting pattern, in which state parliamentarians and clan representatives elect members of parliament to the national parliament, who elect the president.
