Former tennis star Chris Evert announced she has been diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Evert is currently working with ESPN as a broadcaster and reported that he will be working from home for ESPN to receive treatment in the next coverage of the Australian Open.
“I wanted to share my diagnosis of stage 1 ovarian cancer and the story behind it as a way to help others. I’m very lucky to have been caught early and expect positive results from my chemo plan,” Evert said in a statement. “… And thank you all for respecting my health and the need to focus on my treatment plan. I will be appearing at home from time to time on ESPN Aussie Open coverage.”
Evert, an 18-time Grand Slam individual champion, was unanimously inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1995. His individual titles included two Australian Open titles, seven French Open titles, three Wimbledon victories and six US Open titles. He entered the 18 Grand Slams in three back-to-back tournaments (1974-75, 1979-80, 1985-86) in the French Open and four consecutive tournaments in the US Open (1975-78). Evert also won three Grand Slam doubles titles in his professional tennis career.

Evert’s 1C stage ovarian cancer is in its early stages and was found after a preventive hysterectomy. Cancer has not been detected anywhere else in her body and this week she has started the first of six rounds of chemotherapy.
Chris’s younger sister, Jeanne, died of ovarian cancer in February 2020 at the age of 62. Jeanne was also a professional tennis player in the 1970s.
“When I get into chemo, he’s the one who inspires me,” Evert said. “I’ll think of him. And he’ll get me.”
