Pat Cummins is focused on doing justice to the appointment of Australia’s new Test captain and believes limited leadership would be “too much” for him, the 28-year-old said on Saturday.
Cummins is the first Australian pawnbroker to lead the team in 65 years since Tim Paine left it earlier this month as a result of a “sexting” scandal.
Limited skipper Aaron Finch took Australia to the first T20 World Cup title earlier this month, and the Cummins agreed to share the captaincy with the team.
“It’s probably too early to tell, especially since I see this role starting and seeing where we’re going,” Cummins told the Australian Associated Press.

“I definitely feel like asking too much. I’d like to concentrate on the test cricket.
“Aaron is doing a wonderful job,” Cummins said, adding that it was best for “someone who can lead the white team to take theirs, to take them in their own direction.”
“At the moment I’m only focused on testing, that will remain the same” for the foreseeable future.
Finch, 35, is keen to lead the team at least until 2023 at the World Cup in India over 50, after which Australia will have to find his successor.
Cummins, who stressed that he does not want to miss Test cricket, said it has been flooded with messages since he got the role of Test captain, but the feeling has not yet been internalized.
“Probably not completely,” he said after a Gold Coast training session.
“I think until I go out to Gabba and see the big crowd at home, take out Baggy Green (the cap) and go to the draw, they’ll probably be there for me then. It’s a rather strange feeling.”
Brisbane’s Gabba Stadium will host the first Ashes Test against England from 8 December. Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Perth are the other venues in the five-game group.
