KABUL (Reuters) – A minivan exploded in the western Afghan city of Herat on Saturday, killing at least six people, officials said.

Herat Commander Mawlawi Ansari told Reuters that nine people were injured. The cause of the explosion was unclear.

A Herat health official, who asked not to be named, said an explosion hit a small van used for public transport in the late 1800s and left three people seriously injured.

Since the Taliban took power in August, there have been a series of explosions and attacks throughout Afghanistan, with some claimed by Islamic State.

The attacks have heightened the security challenges of the new administration as the country faces an economic crisis.
