The Yunnan Seismology Bureau said 22 people were injured in the quake, two seriously, in Ninglang County.
The provincial seismological administration said there was still no news of damage to homes, but Xinhua State News Agency said it had sent 60 search and rescue teams to the epicenter.
China is regularly hit by earthquakes, especially in its western and southwestern mountainous regions.
In september three people were killed and dozens were injured when a shallow earthquake struck Sichuan Province, damaging tens of thousands of homes.
