Separated family and friends on the border between Singapore and Malaysia can soon be reunited without quarantine.
The Singapore and Malaysia Vaccine Travel Route (VTL) will be launched from 29 November.
The prime ministers of the two countries announced in a joint statement today (November 8) that VTL will be between Changi Airport and Kuala Lumpur International Airport.
The reopening, however, only takes air travel. Does not include ground travel via Causeway or Second Link.
“The prime minister also hopes to resume travel across land links between the two countries in the near future,” the statement says.
In a Facebook post, Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong noted the good progress of each country’s efforts to integrate its population and manage the pandemic.
“So we agreed that it is time to gradually resume cross-border travel between the two countries. This will help revitalize our economy, restore interpersonal relationships and strengthen our bilateral cooperation, ”Mr. Lee said.
The two prime ministers noted that there are ongoing specific discussions about a similar travel scheme that has been vaccinated and the reopening of travel along the Causeway and the Second Link, given the public health situation in Johor and Singapore.
So far, Singapore has VTLs with more than 10 other countries, including South Korea, Australia and the United States.
Under the VTL scheme, all passengers entering Singapore are not required to be warned to stay home, but will only be required to undergo a Covid-19 polymerase chain reaction test before and on arrival.
Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Singapore-Kuala Lumpur air route was one of the busiest in the world.
On land, about half a million people made daily trips between Singapore and Johor before the borders closed in March last year.
