The government has previously announced that only fully-employed staff or those healed within the time limit set by Covid-19 will be able to return to the office next year.
However, the Ministry of Health (MOH) has further relaxed the rules today (December 14) to allow 50 percent of workers who can work from home to return to office by January 1, 2022.
Singapore argued that it was “in a better position to alleviate the default attitude of working from home”.
Finance Minister Lawrence Wong told a news conference at the Covid-19 National Working Group that the government was considering removing the concession to return people to workplaces with a negative Covid-19 test.
“It has implications for employers and employees, which is why we are consulting and discussing this specific move with our three partners and will provide more details when the agreements are finalized,” said Mr Wong, who is the team leader. .
The MOH added that there will also be more relaxed measures for work-related events, and the 50 limit will be raised for some events.
Participants in these events, however, must be in disguise and at a safe distance from each other, and all must be vaccinated or cured from Covid-19 within a set timeframe.
The MOH said, however, that workplace gatherings would remain banned, and that more details would be published separately.
He added that testing remains the key to early detection and maintenance of early detection and transmission of viruses, especially in the new Omicron variant.
In doing so, the government will extend subsidies to companies with employees who are required to take mandatory tests. Grants ending on December 31 will be available until March 31 next year.
“In addition, employers and firms should be prepared to test costs as part of their normal business operations,” MOH said.
