Fourteen people have yet to be found after falling from a height of Champlain Towers South near Miami on June 24.
Searchers at a home that partially collapsed near Miami found another victim on Tuesday, with confirmed deaths rising to 95, heavy rain showers and the challenge of identifying the victims ’remains slowed the recovery effort.
“It’s a scientific and methodical process to identify human remains,” Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine said in a news release.
“As we said, this job is more difficult over time, and even though our team is working as hard as they can, it takes time,” he said.
Fourteen people are still being found for 20 days after falling from the Champlain Towers South high in Surfside, Florida, while residents slept in the early hours of June 24th.
The number of missing has been confirmed by 10 as yet unidentified victims, officials said.
Since the search operation began, 892 trucks of concrete and debris have been removed from the site so far by staff, Miami-Dade Mayor also said Tuesday.
On Monday, nine other victims were identified as reported by the Miami Herald newspaper.
Model and mother Cassie Stratton, 40, called her husband on June 24 at 1:30 a.m. (5:30 GMT), the newspaper told her the condo was shaking and there was a hole in the pool area. While he was talking, the phone line died.
“I’ll never forget that,” Mike Stratton told the Miami Herald. His body was recovered on July 10.
To date, the medical trial has identified the remains of 85 of the 95 known victims, and Levine Cava added that their relatives have been informed.
The list of undiscovered was completed from all reports received from family members, though to be sure dear ones missing they were in the building when they fell, officials said.
The only survivors have been rescued in a matter of hours after part of a 12-story ocean condominium complex. fell without warning.
Engineers and others investigating the cause of the collapse have been working to identify key parts of the 40-year-old building to determine what happened, Surfside Mayor Charles Burkett said.
“We are looking at whether the building is in line with what the plans say,” he said.
Officials have yet to determine the cause though evidence of structural disintegration is created.
Consultations are being conducted by an engineer hired in the town of Surfside, a team from the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology, and experts hired by lawyers representing families and others.
The slowdown in the process led to heavy rains on Monday that flooded the site and underground garage, forcing searchers to pause while the water was pumped, authorities said.
