TAIPEI (Reuters) – Taiwanese Vice President William Lai ended his visit to the United States and Honduras with a virtual meeting with U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to show support for the island claimed by Washington from China.
Lai has traveled to Honduras this week to be named its new president, trying to strengthen troubled relations with one of Taiwan’s last remaining diplomatic allies.
With only 14 countries maintaining official relations with Taiwan, Beijing sees China as a territory without the right to capture a state.
Returning to Taiwan in San Francisco on Friday, Laik said he had almost spoken to Pelosi, one of the most important politicians in the ruling Democratic Party.
“I welcomed @SpeakerPelosi, a human rights champion and a true friend of Taiwan. We are committed to working together to strengthen US-Taiwan cooperation,” Laik said in a tweet, sharing a photo of the video call, and they attended. Washington’s de facto Taiwanese ambassador, Hsiao Bi-khim.
