Rittenhouse, 18, Joseph Rosenbaum, 36, and Anthony Huber, 26, and Gaige Grosskreutz, 28, are charged with injury on August 25, 2020. The shootings took place during protests in Kenosha – caused by fire, riots and looting – at a black man who was left standing at the waist after Jacob Blake was shot dead by police.
After approximately eight hours of discussion, Kenosha County Judge Bruce Schroeder said he would accept the jury’s request to call him one day and return on Wednesday at 9 a.m. (1500 GMT).
“I understand you want to rest for the evening,” Schroeder said. “You are responsible for this specific point.”
A jury of 7 women and 5 men sent two notes to the court on Tuesday, without even giving a hint of the essence of their discussion. The first notice requested additional copies of the first six pages of the 36-page jury’s instructions and the second requested copies of the last 30 pages.
The high-profile case puts the prosecution’s argument that Rittenhouse shot the men unjustifiably against a claim that the teenager acted in self-defense. Earlier on Tuesday, Rittenhouse had an indirect task to reduce the jury, with a two-week testimony consisting of 18 members, to deliberate on the 12th. He selected six papers from a metal raffle glass, each with the number of a juror appointed as a substitute.
Rittenhouse has pleaded not guilty and took a stand last week to argue that he fired a gun after being attacked by men. Rosenbaum, the first person to be shot that night, said he took the barrel of his semi-automatic rifle.
On Monday, prosecutors and defense attorneys gave their final arguments https://www.reuters.com/world/us/key-moments-closing-arguments-rittenhouse-murder-trial-2021-11-15, and offered a variety of representations. defendant.
Prosecutors described Rittenhouse as an irresponsible guard who caused a series of violent encounters, first raising his rifle in a threatening manner, then firing Rosenbaum, which led to an “active shooting” situation that sought to stop others.
The defense said Rittenhouse, who was carrying a medical kit in addition to his pistol, helped the injured and used a car dealership to protect Kenosha from property damage seen more than two nights before the shooting.
The shootings in 2013 in George Zimmerman’s Trayvon Martin, a deadly shooting at an unarmed black teenager, have been the most watched case of a civilian’s right to self-defense.
Like Zimmerman, Rittenhouse has become a polarized figure, considered heroic by some conservatives who advocate for expanding gun rights and many on the left as a symbol of an irresponsible American culture of arms.
Kenosha was furious at the trial, and there was a small crowd of protesters outside the courthouse on Tuesday, some holding placards in favor of Rittenhouse, others demanding racial justice and his conviction.
On Tuesday, the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department released a press release acknowledging “anxiety about the Kyle Rittenhouse trial,” but saying he now saw no need to set limits or close roads.
