GENEVA (Reuters) – The World Health Organization (WHO) warned countries on Friday to quickly implement travel restrictions related to the new B.1.1.529 variant of COVID-19, saying they should take “a risk-based scientific approach”.

“At the moment, he is warning about the implementation of travel measures,” WHO spokesman Christian Lindmeier said at a UN conference in Geneva. “The WHO recommends that countries continue to apply a risk-based scientific approach when implementing travel measures.”

The WHO, which called a meeting of experts on Friday to assess whether it is a variant of interest or a variant of concern, will share more guidelines on actions that governments can take, he said.

It will take a few weeks to understand the effect of the variant, and researchers are working to determine how contagious it is and how it will affect therapists and vaccines, he added.
