Hannah Laik had her first entrepreneurship at the age of 15, when the “era of blogging shops” began, before e-commerce became commonplace in Singapore.

He then pocketed money from shopping malls at 3pm to buy trendy accessories and sell them online.

“Then the whole process of supplying post offices, getting sales, filling out orders – I loved everything and nothing felt like work,” Hannah recounted.

He loved running his own business and this hobby encouraged him to pursue Business Studies when he studied Ngee Ann Polytechnic with a specialization in entrepreneurship.

He also holds a degree in Business Administration from the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom.

Shortly afterwards, he ventured into two other businesses before finally creating a so-called soap business BodySlick with his mother, Caroline, who grew up in the family business.

The name ‘BodySlick’ was inspired by the smooth, slippery feel that soap bars and bath bombs leave before washing your skin.

Founded in December 2018, the startup formulates soaps that are not gentle on the skin, as well as soaps that look good and smell good.

Oil stains make up a large part of their mood board, because skin-loving nourishing oils are a big part of their formulations.

With a son with eczema and skin diseases, Carol worked on soaps because the soaps she bought in the store were not suitable.

“As a skin care junkie, I got to know the ingredients and sciences behind soap and I immediately felt the difference when I tried the difference,” Hannah said.

“At BodySlick, we want you to look forward to your bathing time again and be fresh, uplifted, inspired, ready to take the day off or rest at the end.”

After three years in the business, the mother-daughter couple added bath bombs to the product line. Their bath bomb collection includes The BubbleBomb, The BubbleUp and Relaxing Bath Bombs.

In addition to the popular bath bomb collection, Buff Bars are part of soaps mixed with exfoliants such as oats and ground coffee, and offer customers cleaning and exfoliation work in two in a single bar.

Depending on the nature of the soaps and bath bombs, the product research and development (R&D) and formulation phases usually take a few months or a year.

Production and product testing is done at BodySlick Studio, where almost all raw materials are imported.

“We spend a lot of time thinking and deliberately about what our customers want us to experience, how we want them to feel, both physically and sensorially,” Hannah said.

Attention is paid to all components, taking into account the purpose, origin, quality and safety of the products.

Soap and bath bombs are science and art and the couple is always looking forward to improving and improving their soap making skills.

According to its 28-year-old co-founder, BodySlick differs from other bath bomb brands in a number of ways.

First, the couple ensures that the bath bombs are sulfate-free and use a more expensive, but much smoother, foam-containing ingredient.

Secondly, its products are handmade in Singapore and are fully committed to being cruelty-free and only deal with suppliers who live up to those values.

The business was quickly profitable in the first three months of its launch, and sold 10,000 bath bombs in the first seven months. He achieved a six-figure mark in sales only from the line of bath bombs.

However, like many other startups, BodySlick also faced many challenges along the way.

“When we started selling bath bombs, it was common for most homes in Singapore not to have bathtubs, so our bath bombs wouldn’t sell very well,” Hannah said.

They also received disappointing comments from good relatives and friends, who noticed that the products would not sell well in the local market.

However, the couple had confidence in their business and have achieved several milestones. For example, they partnered with hotels to supply bath bombs.

“Having confidence in your gut and following your dreams can come in very handy, and we are always grateful for how it has worked,” Hannah said.

“It keeps the excitement of seeing people trust, buy and love what I sell on the internet just like every year ago,” he added.

Announcing some of BodySlick’s future business plans, he said they are looking to produce liquid soaps next year to meet customer demand.
