Strong tremors were also felt in the surrounding provinces, as well as in Dubai.
Tehran, Iran – Two powerful earthquakes have hit southern Iran in a row, leaving at least one person dead and terrified neighbors.
Esmaeil Bayramnejad, head of Iran’s Seismological Center, told state television that two tremors of 6.4 and 6.3 degrees occurred within a minute in an area near the island of Qeshm, near the port city of Bandar Abbas, on Sunday afternoon.
Earthquakes were felt in nearby provinces, including Kerman, and in the United Arab Emirates. In the following hours there were several aftershocks in Iran.
The victim was killed when a power column fell on a street in Bandar Abbas. Fragments of Mount Geno in Bandar Abbas were also falling on social media videos.
Emergency officials told state television that so far there have been no further casualties or major injuries.
“We were working when we felt the building shake,” a young woman told state television. “We thought it would end soon, but it lasted about 30 seconds, so we ran.”
There have been power and internet outages in the affected provinces, and in some areas of them there have also been outages on landlines. Officials said they will reconnect soon.
President Ebrahim Raisi ordered his cabinet to be convened immediately to discuss measures to ensure the safety of the affected areas. In addition, his first vice-president Mohammad Mohkber ordered him to travel to Hormozgane to personally assess the situation.
Curiously, the quake was announced by a senior Tehran City Council deputy who is preparing a large 13-acre cemetery and happened in a day so that the victims of an earthquake could be taken to the capital.
Experts have warned for years that a major earthquake could hit Tehran one day because it is close to fault lines.
