Two goals in extra time give Algeria the title; hosts Qatar beat Egypt in the third round.

Algeria scored two goals in extra time to beat Tunisia’s neighbors 2-0 and win the 2021 FIFA Arabian Cup.

Amir Sayoud scored in the ninth minute of extra time, and Yacine Brahimi scored in the Al-Bayt Stadium in Al Khor with the final shot of the match for Algeria on Saturday.

Algeria added the Arab crown to the 2019 African Cup of Nations title, which will be defended in Cameroon next month.

Sayoud, 31, made his international debut in the opening match of the Algerian tournament, but did not play again until just over an hour into the final.

His stunning 99th-minute shot turned Sayoud into an instant national hero.

Brahimi scored on a breakaway with the final shot of the match, Tunisia pushed them all into a final corner and Brahimi ran out of control after the ball was cleared by the Algerian defense.

Al Jazeera’s sports correspondent Joanna Gasiorowska, speaking from the Al-Bayt stadium, said it was a “terrible end” for a “young and weak” Algerian side.

“They don’t have their European stars on their side and they were named as Algeria A in the championship,” he said. “They’ve done so well to get here [to the final], and now they have won the tournament. It’s really unbelievable. ‘

Earlier, the hosts Qatar beat Egypt 5-4 on penalties in the third-place playoff game.

The hot match played on Saturday seemed to go in both directions, as both teams took almost equal possession of the ball, and Egypt prevailed slightly in the final minutes.

But the match at Doha Stadium 974 went into overtime after several attempts by Egypt were stopped.

Without a goal in extra time, Qatari goalkeeper Meshaal Barsham arrived at the opportunity to block a penalty and help his team get a bronze medal.

The 2022 World Cup will be held in Qatar from November 21 to December 18.

Al-Bayt Stadium, a tent model used in the Qatari deserts, will host the opening match of the upcoming tournament.
