The joy and misery of hunting video game trophies

Easter eggs like this can be a lot of fun, but there are many that are so dark that you will never find them in a normal game. I played Hitman 2 until he died and he never realized that you could call him Kraken on the Sapienza map.

Gamification and competition

Rankings and the search for high scores have always been a part of the game, but the trophies and achievements we know today began with Microsoft’s Gamerscore system for the Xbox 360 in 2005. That was extended to Windows Games in 2007, when Valve added the same achievements on Steam. The following year, Sony joined the PlayStation Trophies, and a few years later Apple and Google added achievements to their mobile gaming services. Nintendo is the only major gaming platform without an achievement system.

Trophies often extend the life of a game, encouraging players to look beyond the main story, but in the end they are arbitrary challenges to boast of rights. And he can look for trophy hunters. Known for his Hakoom PlayStation Network handle, Hakam Karim is a world leader in collecting and turning off PlayStation trophies a few years ago. According to this, he has 105,828 trophies in the final counts PSN profiles, the most unknown official classification.

“I spend about 10 to 15 hours a day playing trophies and unlocking them,” says Karim. “Say about 90 hours a week or so.”

Although there are games with more general numbers of trophies, Karim’s leadership is largely based on Platinum trophies (he had 3,188 at the time of writing). To get a platinum trophy, you need to unlock all the other trophies in the game. The trophies are awarded different scores depending on the level of difficulty: 15 points for Bronze, 30 for Silver, 90 for Gold and 300 for Platinum (renewed last year by Sony from 180).

Sony doesn’t maintain an official ranking, and the trophy hunting community is debating who it should be. PSN Trophy Headsfor example, he lists Roughdawg4 (who prefers not to share his real name) as the current leader with 110,631 trophies and 3,360 Platinum trophies. He spends about 20 to 40 hours a week looking for trophies.

“I got hooked very early on the PS3 days,” says Roughdawg4. “I’ve always been a complete player, so it’s natural for me to win trophies and do everything you can in a game.” After a disagreement with the owner, he removed himself from PSN Profiles. “Personally, I think he has made unethical decisions about how the site works,” Karim says before making some claims about hacking some trophies.

Reading forums on trophy hunting sites, complaints of this kind are common. People are accused of working on a single account for hacking trophies or working in a single team, but these claims are difficult to prove.

The Endless Grind

As there are so many high-search trophies, a large majority don’t have much thought.

“At both ends of the scale, goals are unrealistic,” says Webb. “When you start a game it’s about wasting any achievement or trophy oxygen. There are a few accomplishments you get by dying: how is that fun or even an achievement?”

There are also almost impossible achievements, such as playing the game several times, getting first place in the world first level or reaching a level that cannot be achieved in the game.

“We want players to feel accomplished when they complete tough trophies, so we try to avoid repetitive or tedious tasks, the only thing players feel after finishing them is peace of mind,” says Timmins. “Creating a difficult but attractive trophy is not easy.”
